My wife is no big animal-rights activist, but one of the first times that I was in her apartment, I noticed that the tag attached to Basil's carrying case said, not "I belong to λ Lastname," but "I belong with λ Lastname." When I said I liked that and asked if that was the phrasing that progressive no-kill shelters suggested or something, she told me no, it just felt right to say it that way: he's a companion to her, not a thing for her to own. I'm no big animal-rights activist either, but I'm pretty sure I fell halfway in love with her right then, on our third date.
