Well, it’s October 1st, and I’m tentatively back on other social media. But I’m still not sure I like the role Facebook and Twitter play in my life, so I’m posting these could-have-been status updates here, not there, even as their content is informed by things I came across on Facebook and Twitter. Hmm.

1. MOCKINGJAY 2 TICKETS ARE ON SALE WOOHOO! I have no idea if it’s going to be any good, as the other Hunger Games movies have ranged from very good to mediocre, and I am forever and always a hardcore diehard books fan and will probably be whispering furiously to λ through the whole thing about how they shouldn't have changed that what are they doing, but TICKETS ARE ON SALE LEMME AT ‘EM I ALREADY HAVE A GIGANTIC HONKING BIRD NECKLACE FOR THE OCCASION

2. Today is Julie Andrews’ 80th birthday and my major takeaway right now is that I am a bad fan who REALLY needs to remember when her birthday is because when I saw her trending on Twitter I freaked out completely, terrified that she was dead

3. Lin-Manuel Miranda just tweeted that there is a third, deleted Cabinet rap battle from Hamilton, in which Hamilton, Madison, and Jefferson go at it over slavery, and I NEED THIS YESTERDAY

4. Everyone is all over the Pope for visiting with Kim Davis, posting “He’s dead to me now” and “Never respect this guy again” and so on, and. Like. People. He’s the Pope. That means that by definition, he is Catholic. And that means that, if he upholds his own Church’s teachings, he is going to be super-liberal on certain stuff, like income inequality/poverty and the death penalty, and super-conservative on other stuff, like reproductive issues and women’s rights and, yes, LGBTQ stuff. That is the Catholic package. The trouble has been that in recent years, before Pope Francis, the Church really, really slacked on the income inequality etc. side of things and only focused on the stuff that fits neatly into a Republican party platform. So Francis shows up and he’s legitimately amazing with respect to actually upholding the whole “feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit those in prison” side of things -- like the traditional works of mercy and the command to treat “the least of these” as you would treat Jesus is really, truly top priority for him. And people see that and they think, oh, the last Pope was conservative, now this one is liberal! And they somehow expect him to support gay marriage. Guys, “Who am I to judge?” is the absolute best you can ever possibly expect from the Catholic Church, and is so much better than anything I have ever seen from it before. Judging gays is not a priority for him. But just because he’s not passing judgment on whether gays can be close to God doesn’t mean he doesn’t think gay marriage is wrong and a threat to the family, and doesn’t mean he’s not going to stand in solidarity with those who oppose it. I think it’s important to note here that Kim Davis is not one of the people who’s been spewing hate. She’s just a person who didn’t want to give licenses to marry gay people because that’s against her religion, but she got befuddled on what the definition of “conscientious objection” is (hint: it means quitting your job.) And apparently Pope Francis shares her befuddlement over conscientious objection. And he shares her conviction that gay marriage is wrong. Because he’s a Catholic. He is also not going to be tweeting #IStandwithPP in Latin anytime soon, if anyone was wondering. It’s time people stopped expecting him to adhere to the Democrat party line just because he cares about poor people. He’s never going to. No pope ever is going to. Time to accept that Catholics exist, and that the head of the Catholic church is one of them, and then appreciate the hell out of him for all of the good he is doing for the world. Because it’s a lot.

5. Wow, that item was a lot longer than I meant it to be and it probably should have been its own post. And now I am out.

I forgot about Julie Andrews too until I read this! I immediately texted my sister too! (who didn't respond because she's in Belfast with my other sister. Whatever. I'm not jealous.)

I enjoyed reading #4, I had something to add to it but I'm kind of foggy right now.

I've become one of those annoying people who replies to every single one of a person's posts.

Sorry.

NO NO NO I'M SO HAPPY YOU COMMENT ON EVERYTHING! Comment away! I like your comments! I mean, look, YOU ALSO CARE THAT IT'S JULIE ANDREWS' BIRTHDAY!

(seriously though I'm so glad she's not dead) (this is what happens when you fangirl 80-year-olds)

(also selecting an icon here reminds me that I have SO MANY Julie icons)

On a non-Julie-related matter, did one of your sisters move overseas? I feel like I got confused about this somewhere along the line.

*snort* Right?! Seems like every time I see a headline with one of my favorite actors' names in the past few years, I have that split-second of arrested heartbeat, hoping it's not announcing their death.

YOU REPLIED TO A JULIE ICON WITH A CAROL ICON. OMFG.

(Sorry. I bet you don't know about my Julie/Carol thing. Anyway Carol is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES as well.)

Heheheheh . . . no, I don't know about your "Julie/Carol thing", but I know that they are both awesomeness.

I just looked at my icons (most of which are inactive) and was shocked (SHOCKED, I tell you) to discover that I have no Julie icons. I'm sure I did at some point.

(By the way my sister responded with appropriate enthusiasm when I texted her.)

See? This is what happens when you (meaning: I) don't update for months. Yes, my oldest sister (the same one I texted about Julie) moved to England in February, after marrying the (English) father of my nephews. It was my nephews' 6th birthday on Sunday, which is the main reason I was over there.

I am so fucking lucky to have a permanent account (it's entirely thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jpallan) and so none of my icons have gone inactive. I think that would be a tragic feeling. Anyway, you're welcome to steal any of my Julie icons if you want.

Oh my goodness, your oldest sister and your nephews are living in England! Wow! Is it hard to have them so far away? (And happy birthday to the nephews! They have the honor of sort of almost having the same birthday as Julie Andrews!)

Ugh. I accidentally replied on Gmail and so IDK where that commment even went, so I'll put it up here.

With Shawnna it's not so bad: we all have Whatsapp so we text each other all the time, in fact, I think I talk to her more now that she's over there. It's a little harder with my nephews, since they're not old enough to text. We do Skype quite a bit, though. I'm fortunate to have developed a strong bond with them before they left, so they're very comfortable with me. Every morning I was there one or both of them would waltz into my room at 6:30-7am and crawl in bed with me (unfortunately, they didn't want to go back to sleep, but because of the time change and my natural sleeping cycle, I was more OK waking up at 6:30 than I would be over here).

The whole family will be coming over to visit us in March, and hopefully will relocate back to the US in about 5 years, after my sister gets UK citizenship (the boys already have it).

This is exactly why I'm glad you're back here on LJ. I missed stuff like this.

Aww, thank you! <3 LJ suits my style of writing/thinking much better than Facebook ever did, I am finding. As is evidenced by the fact that I thought each bullet point was going to be about the length of a status update, and then I went on about the Pope for like 500 words. I had considered posting to FB about the Pope but it would go to Read More after like two sentences and then nobody would read the rest.

I remember when the movie The Sound of Music came out and being taken to see it.

The Pope is Roman Catholic after all and the head of the Roman Catholic Church. We only have Kim Davis' words on what conversation they had together. Why a Pentecostal would request a meeting with a Roman Catholic Pope is beyond me. [My guess continues to be that she wants to get on the speaking circuit as is her decision. I won't be in the audience]. Pentecostals historically have considered Roman Catholics to be among the unsaved. Nowadays that has softened to a reluctant admission that some few of them can have gotten saved due to the Charismatic movement of the 1970s.
If Kim Davis and the Pope met and had sex or a cup of tea-- meh.

I've read enough of the (at) Pontifex account on Twitter to know that the Pope is a Pope is a Pope and not a can of tomato paste after all.

Good idea about social media! I had actually deleted fb a few years back (so I was down to just LJ and occasionally tumblr) but then I moved to Korea so I re-enabled facebook. I think they all serve different purposes, and it sounds like you're aware of where you want your limits to be, so that's great. I try to make a "no internet/phone after __pm" whenever I find myself getting to obsessed.
